For Excellence, the student needs to analyse aspects of visual and/or oral text(s) perceptively, through close viewing and/or listening, supported by evidence.
This involves demonstrating insightful and/or original understanding of significant aspects of texts.
This student has perceptively analysed significant aspects of The Dark Knight through the techniques of camera work, pace, dialogue and symbolism. This is done by demonstrating insightful understanding of how camera work develops the audience’s understanding of the Joker and Batman (1), and how the editing of the pace of the film combines with the use of silence to present the Joker as a predator (2).
Perceptive understanding is shown through the analysis of how the actions and dialogue of one brave man contrast with the self-preservation of the group, and how this foreshadows later actions in the film (3). Insightful understanding is shown in the analysis of the symbolism of weaponry, where the characters are compared to terrorists and modern governments in their continual fight for society’s good (4).
For a more secure Excellence, the student could further develop the analysis of the idea that Batman is feared by Gotham’s criminal society, and that although Rachel is a strong character she still trembles in the presence of the Joker (1) .

Review of Slumdog Millionaire
Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, experienced the biggest day of his life. One day Jamal was given the chance to compete on the television show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire.” Throughout the show, Jamal correctly answered all of the questions leading up to the final one. Jamal was beaten and tortured by authorities, who refused to believe he knew the answers to the questions asked. They think he somehow cheated. He and his brother Malik had major conflict towards the end of the movie regarding latika’s well being. Also, what stood out the most in the movie was how effective the actors portrayed the reality of living in the slums of Mumbai. Orphaned kids who ran rampant throughout the streets were really sad to see. The events that took place in his childhood helped him to answer the trivia questions in the show.
Throughout the movie Jamal was torn between his senses of loyalty to his brother, Salim, and his love for Latika. He struggled to escape his “Slumdog” lot in life and had difficulty risking his own life to be with his love. Along with this, he also contended with the betrayal of Salim, a crazy pimp, and a crime lord, who basically takes Latika into hostage. Not to mention, authorities are sure that he cheated to make it so far in the competition. They sought to prove it even if they have to beat it out of him. Further into the game show Jamal seemed to be having a great time. If he was unsure about the answer to a question, he used opportunities to ask the audience for help. Undoubtedly, the people who were watching the show probably wondered how he was smart enough to answer these questions. In fact, even the host of the show was surprised on how he was able to answer questions correctly. Then the second day of the show began and Jamal returned to answer the final question. The host who asked Jamal the last question
